LaTonya Baldwin of Altrenativies for Girls had this to say: I have been a wannabe writer most of my life. I've enjoyed some modest success in publishing including some freelance work in Rolling Out Detroit and published in small press such as Women of The Web Anthology and Maxis Review. Published my own e-zine for a couple of years, Lotus Blooms Journal. In 2005, I turned my attention to my desire promote reading and literacy among young women. I have two amazing daughters, Rickney and Thema and a very loving and supporting partner.

Calling All Artists

Hi, everyone on my mailing list!

Calling All Artists, (and art lovers, too):

A Woman's Image of Clinton Township is holding an art show/ fund
raiser for Gilda's Club of Detroit,
Saturday April 12th 3:00- 8:00
p.m
. They are looking for artists that have works of art that may
offer inspiration to those dealing with cancer. They ask that all art
pieces are no larger than 42"x32" keeping the theme light hearted and
up lifting.

Their hope is that your art work will sell and that you will donate a
portion of your sales to Gilda's Club. They are asking for 10% or
higher.

Please contact Stacy Ecker at 586-286-1277 or 586-747-3353 for
questions and registration.

For those of you who don't know, Gilda's Club is a free cancer support
community where men, women and children with all types of cancer and
their families and friends can enhance the quality of their lives
through support, networking and education, paying tribute to comedian
Gilda Radner.

I'm forwarding this because it is a worthy cause near to my heart.  My
sister died of colon cancer when she was 28.

Artists: you not only get great exposure, you also get to sell your
work, donating 10% (or more if you like) of the selling price to
Gilda's Club.

All press releases will be handled by A Woman's Image and Gilda's Club
of Detroit targeting all media: news print, TV, radio and local
publications.

A Woman's Image is a retail store assisting the needs of men, women
and children who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy,
alopecia and other hair loss issues along with mastectomy apparel.  A
great majority of the people who grace our doors are dealing with
cancer related issues so it made sense to have a fund raiser for
Gilda's Club of Detroit. This fund raiser is a wonderful experience to
give back to our community.
They have received full support from Gilda's Club to offer a plea to
all local artists to become involved in this fund raising event.

A $5.00 donation is requested for all who would like to view the
artist's work.  Wine, cheese and other light refreshments are being
offered.  Door prizes will be raffled off with all proceeds going to
Gilda's Club. If you are interested in donating your art work for
raffle please let A Woman's Image know.

Confirmation of your involvement is recommended by February 29, 2008.
At that time please let A Woman's Image know how many pieces you would
like to enter. Wall mounts and shelves are available. If you would
like to display your art upon an easel, you will have to provide that
display.

Please have all art pieces to A Woman's Image by March 28th, 2008 so
they can have proper placement for your art work.

A Woman's Image is also participating in the Komen Race for the Cure
on May 31st, 2008. If you would like to be part of the team, a free
T-Shirt will be provided with your registration.

Please contact Stacy Ecker at 586-286-1277 or 586-747-3353 for
questions and registration.

Read all over!

Author Stephanie L. Jones accounts for her past as a survivor of sexual child abuse in the book Enemy between My Legs. In her book she recalls her being robbed of her innocence at the age of five. Before you judge someone for their live choices, please read this book. If you have been a victim or know someone who has been a victim sexual abuse, please take this time to heal and take heed to the warning signs of sexual abuse. According to Jones, “One in 3 women and 1 in 5 men are sexually abused as children.  What happens and what are the effects once they get older?”

This is topic to which we have just barley begun to scratch the surface. Please if you know someone or if you need help with coping please log on to the website below:

Dear Friends/Supporters/Business Owners/Potential Donors:

I am writing to invite your company to become a corporate sponsor of the Inaugural Women of the World Poetry Slam to be held in Detroit, MI on March 12 th-15th, 2008. The Women of the World Poetry Slam is an exciting new national event designed to increase performance poetry opportunities for women. Sponsorship opportunities include service provision, product donations, and financial support. Choose the one that best suits your organization's ability to support this innovative national event.

Poetry Slam, Inc. is a financially sound 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established in Chicago and charged with overseeing the international coalition of poetry slams. PSI's previous activities include facilitation of two major national events, the National Poetry Slam team championship, which has taken place since 1990, and the annual Individual World Poetry Slam championship since 2004. Additionally, PSI facilitates an annual Poetry Cross Training Conference.

The mission of PSI is to promote the performance and creation of poetry while cultivating literary activities and spoken word events in order to build audience participation, stimulate creativity, awaken minds, foster education, inspire mentoring, encourage artistic statement, and engage communities worldwide in the revelry of language.

Women have distinctive perspectives that need to be heard, but all too often they are unable to participate in public art forms and forums due to such barriers as single parenthood, low-income levels, and lack of childcare. PSI intends to make WOWps a unique showcase event that supports women by helping to provide childcare, scholarships/subsidies for attendance, and creating a supportive atmosphere during the event.

We truly hope that you will consider us this year as you make your commitment to some of the many worthwhile needs in the local community and beyond.   The attached forms detail the designated levels and benefits and additional information about Poetry Slam, Inc and the Women of the World event.  We will graciously accept any donation amount.  Please complete the enclosed donation form and fax it to (313) 341-7702.  Any questions or requests for additional information should be directed to my Sponsorship Coordinator, Airea Matthews at (313) 585-5333.

Thank you in advance or your consideration and support!

Sincerely,
